ABS Recognized by the N S C for Reaching Significant Safety Milestones
(BUSAN) Hanwha Ocean has received the ABS SMART (SHM) Tier 3 approval in principle (AIP) for its advanced hull monitoring system.
Estimate structural damage to ships
The system from Hanwha Ocean is designed to estimate structural damage to ships and offshore assets during operation, which can support decision making for the optimal maintenance timing to maintain safety. ABS SMART(SHM) Tier 3 recognizes systems that employ hull sensors combined with additional algorithms to generate structural health insights at critical locations, even at locations where no sensors are present.
The AIP
The AIP is one of the first fruits of the Offshore Technology Collaboration Agreement signed by ABS and Hanwha Ocean in 2024. The agreement promotes technology development in three areas: digitalization and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity operations, and sustainability.

Digital technologies
“Recently, shipowners have been including digital technologies as part of their contractual requirements, and classification societies are also in the process of refining regulations related to digitalization. Based on this approval, we will proactively respond to the growing demand for smart and digital technologies in the shipping industry,” said Young Chang Shon, Chief Technology Officer of Hanwha Ocean.

Significant Safety Milestones
On the other hand In recognition of its exceptional achievement in maintaining a safe work environment, the National Safety Council (NSC) presented ABS with two safety awards.
The NSC
The NSC is a globally recognized nonprofit organization committed to eliminating leading causes of preventable death and injury in the workplace and on roadways. Their awards program recognizes organizations and individuals who have made significant contributions to upholding the safety of their workplaces and communities.
The two awards
The two awards celebrate ABS’ accomplishment of reaching a significant number of consecutive hours without incurring occupational injury or illness that resulted in days away from work. Since January 2023, ABS has accumulated more than 15 million hours worked without a lost-time incident (LTI). The second award recognizes six million hours worked without an LTI specific to North American operations dating back to 2021.
