Two Italian Grimaldi Group ships were involved in a collision with obvious consequences in the Greek port of Igoumenitsa, chaired by Guido Grimaldi, having been privatized in the recent past and acquired by the same Neapolitan shipping group according to Shipping Italy
The RO – RO ship Eco Catania coming from Patras, during the mooring maneuver in the internal waters of the port, hit with its bow the starboard side of the Kydon Palace ferry of Minona Lines, a company also part of the Grimaldi Group. The “EKO Katania” had 34 crew members and 11 passengers on board, and was also transporting 377 trailers and 15 trucks
The causes of the accident
The causes of the accident (human error, malfunction of on-board machinery or other external causes) are still to be ascertained. The company has already started an internal investigation and the RINA inspectors are expected on the dock for the routine inspection.
The reconstruction of the route
The reconstruction of the route that led the RO – RO ship to collide with the ferry already docked at the dock (fortunately without passengers on board) was made public by MarineTraffic while videos and images recorded by those who witnessed the scene on site almost immediately appeared on the web.
According to the first available information made public, no injuries were reported but both ships suffered visible damage.An investigation is underway and the competent authorities are assessing the damage and analyzing the dynamics that led to the accident.As stated by the Coast Guard, the passengers who were scheduled to travel with the “KYDON PALACE” will continue their journey under arrangements made by the company.
