Dar Pomorza set off on a voyage around the world 90 years ago

The Dar Pomorza set off on a voyage around the world 90 years ago. It was a ship of the Polish Maritime School. There were about 100 students and 25 crew members on board.

The Dar Pomorza voyage began on 16 September 1934. It was the first Polish voyage around the globe.

Exactly on the 90th anniversary of this event, a grand ceremony was held in Gdynia on the Dar Pomorza Museum Ship – belonging to the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk – to commemorate this achievement.

The ceremony was led by Prof. Daniel Duda – former rector of the Maritime University of Gdynia, honorary president of the Polish Nautical Society, and supported by, among others,

Dr. Marcin Westphal – deputy director for substantive affairs of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk and Prof. Marek Grzybowski – chairman of the Polish Nautical Society, president of the Baltic Maritime and Space Cluster.

The participants of the ceremony included: prof. Daniel Duda – honorary president of the Polish Nautological Society and chairman of the conference;

Prof. Marek Grzybowski – chairman of the board of the Polish Nautological Society

Prof. Adam Weintrit – rector of the Gdynia Maritime University;

Capt. Andrzej Królikowski, PhD, Eng. – president of the board of the Maritime and River League;

Anna Białkowska – deputy director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia;

Joanna Zielińska – councilor of the city of Gdynia;

Stefan Krella – president of the Society of Friends of Dar Pomorza; dr hab.

Jerzy Litwin – senior director of the National Maritime Museum; employees of Dar Pomorza National Maritime Museum, especially Arleta Gałązka – curator and Zbigniew Nadolski – captain of Dar Pomorza – the Museum Ship; representatives of the Piłsudski Union;

Admiral Czesław Dyrcz, PhD, Eng.

Decorations of the Honorary

Admiral Dr. Czesław Dyrcz presented the voyage of the Dar Pomorza around the world and the training ships Dar Młodzieży and Iskra.

Decorations of the Honorary Order of the Association of Piłsudski of the Republic of Poland to the rector of the Maritime University in Gdynia, professor Adam Weintrit.

Decree of Marshal Józef

The resolution was signed by the president of the National Association of Piłsudski of the Republic of Poland, general of the association Stanisław Władysław Śliwa.

– I am very surprised. Being invited to the ceremony on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the voyage around the world, I did not think that I would be honored with such a high distinction – said Prof. Adam Weintrit – Rector of the Maritime University in Gdynia. – Thank you very much. Piłsudski’s men are always by the sea, taking into account the decree of Marshal Józef Piłsudski of November 28, 1918.

Commemorative medals

Father Edmund Skalski – parish priest of the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Poland in Gdynia, chief chaplain of the Piłsudski Union, presented commemorative medals on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Maritime Basilica in Gdynia and the 85th anniversary of the 1st Eucharistic Procession at Sea.

Commemorative porthole

Prof. Daniel Duda presented the National Maritime Museum with a commemorative porthole from the first voyage of the “Dar Młodzieży”.

The professor received the porthole in August this year during a ceremony at the Maritime University in Gdynia – from the academic community.

Letter of Captain John Lloyd

Prof. Daniel Duda received a Letter of Congratulations from the Nautical Institute – a non-governmental organization with consultative status in the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The letter was signed by Captain John Lloyd – Director General of the Nautical Institute.
