The Chairman of the Egyptian SCA, Admiral Osama Rabie, said that new navigation maps for the canal will be prepared, after adding the new double part, which is 10 kilometers long.
He indicated in a statement that the actual operation of the Suez Canal duplication project in the Small Bitter Lakes, for trade, is scheduled to begin during the first quarter of this year, after the completion of issuing the new maps.
The trial operation of the Suez Canal duplication project
Last December, Admiral General Osama Rabie, Chairman of SCA announced the success of the trial operation of the Suez Canal duplication project in the Lesser Bitter Lakes within the project to develop the southern sector of the canal with the passage of two ships from the new navigational channel of the canal after the completion of dredging works in the project from kilometer 122 of the canal numbering to kilometer 132 of the canal numbering.
Enhancing navigational safety in the Canal
Rabie stressed that the development project of the southern sector in its two parts is a major qualitative leap that will contribute to enhancing navigational safety in the Canal and reducing the effects of water and air currents on passing ships, pointing out the many navigational advantages that the Canal duplication project will achieve in the Lesser Bitter Lakes area by increasing the duplication area by 10 km to be added to the New Suez Canal to become 82 km instead of 72 km, which will contribute to increasing the Canal’s capacity by an average of 6 to 8 additional ships per day, in addition to increasing the ability to deal with potential emergencies.
Cost of Tensions in the Red Sea region
Tensions in the Red Sea region cost Egypt about $7 billion in Suez Canal revenues in 2024, equivalent to more than 60 percent of its revenues compared to the previous year, according to previous statements by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The latest available data indicates that the annual revenues of the Suez Canal fell by about a quarter in the fiscal year ending in June, recording $7.2 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year from $9.4 billion in 2022-23.
