Thanks to the Wave 2 the future project and the fuel cells made in Bari by Isotta Fraschini Motori, the technology for having zero-emission ships will be achieved by 2035. Interviews with the protagonists on the occasion of Snim, the Puglia Boat Show
On the occasion of the Sustainability Day promoted by Di.T.N.E . the national energy technological district, which took place as part of the twentieth edition of the Snim, Saloni Nautici di Puglia,
IPCE project
Some of the largest national companies found themselves at the same table to discuss the future of the energy transition in the maritime secto raccording to Shipping Italy
At the center of the discussion is Fincantieri‘s Wave 2 the future, an IPCE project (Important Projects of Common European Interest) for the creation of a hybrid propulsion system.
Many initiatives
SHIPPING ITALY spoke about this topic with the project manager, Caterina Cobino, who says: “Wave 2 the future is one of the many initiatives that the shipyard is taking in the decarbonisation field and has several objectives:
Create operational cruise ships that can power themselves partially hydrogen; develop the technology to use it through our company Isotta Fraschini Motori by developing fuel cell systems suitable for marine use, design alternative engines that use hydrogen and
Create a propulsion system with a combined cycle powered by hydrogen, again for maritime applications. It is a system made up of gas and steam turbines: gas turbines need fuel, hydrogen, while the steam turbine serves to recover heat and therefore increase efficiency.
While the combined cycle is powered 100% by hydrogen, the ships are instead hybrid, they have both a traditional and hydrogen fuel system, a choice due to space problems: too much would be needed to produce the full power.”
Fuel cells made in Bari
On the other hand that Marco Golinelli, cco of Isotta Frachini Motori talks about the development of fuel cells ‘made in Bari’: “We believe in the technological mix that we are tackling with different solutions. The first is a new propulsion platform, entirely developed by Isotta Fraschini, which will have greater efficiency, lower consumption and the possibility of using different fuels, from diesel to HVO, from methanol to hydrogen. A platform therefore for multi-fuel engines.
Future of boating
Finally, the president of Saloni Nautici di Puglia, Giuseppe Meo, the one who strongly believed in the mission of the show as a ‘speaking platform’ for the future of boating, explained. “Our objective is to stimulate a discussion in the area regarding the role that Puglia can carve out for itself in the nautical context, we are in an important geographical position and we have the skills.
