Fincantieri signs order with Carnival for a new series of ships

Some of these will certainly be destined for the Aida brand and will be built in Marghera because in Genoa Sestri Ponente the work on the new dry dock will not yet be completed

Signatures should already be added by the end of November on the construction contracts that Carnival Corporation intends to sign with Fincantieri for a new series of cruise ships of approximately 150,000 gross tons.

At least four ships for Aida

According to SHIPPING ITALY among insiders, some of these ships, at least four, should be destined for the Aida fleet and it is not excluded that some, perhaps the last in the series, could enrich the Costa Crociere fleet.

The first preview

The first preview published last July  spoke of an order for 6 + 2 options (worth at least 8 billion euros), with deliveries starting from 2029, and gave Genoa, Sestri Ponente or Marghera as possible factories assigned the work.

Work is continuing in Sestri Ponente

Regarding the expanding construction site in Genoa, the local port authority has announced that work is continuing in Sestri Ponente on the new construction dock intended to enhance its industrial activity, through the driving of 269 foundation piles with advanced and safe techniques

A new inclined quay

The intervention involves the construction of a new inclined quay which, with its additional 12,500 square meters and a berthing frontage of approximately 313 metres, will be able to accommodate latest generation ships.

Development plan of the Genoa shipbuilding

It is noteworthy that The new construction dock – the final completion of which is scheduled for December 2025 – represents a fundamental piece in the development plan of the Genoa shipbuilding sector, and is part of a broader project which also includes the construction of the super basin serving Fincantieri’s activities” recalls the Port System Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea

Financing finalization

On the other hand Fincantieri has signed an agreement with Carnival Corporation & plc for the design, engineering, and construction of three new cruise ships for the Carnival Cruise Line brand. The value of the agreement, subject to financing finalization and other typical terms and conditions to be completed later this year, is considered as very important

Carnival Legend, which has been sailing for two decades, has capacity for 2,124 passengers – much smaller than the planned new ships

Class of (LNG)

The order is for a new class of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels, which will be approximately 230,000 gross tonnes, the largest ships ever built by Fincantieri and an Italian shipyard, to be delivered in 2029, 2031 and 2033. With over 3,000 guest cabins, the new vessels will carry almost 8,000 passengers at full capacity.

Advanced energy efficiency

These new ships will also feature advanced energy efficiency, waste management, and emission reduction technologies to further reduce the company’s environmental footprint. During its history, Fincantieri has, in total, delivered 75 ships to Carnival Corporation across its portfolio of brands, with a further vessel currently under construction at its yard in Monfalcone, and has delivered 15 cruises ships for the Carnival Cruise Line brand.
