Italy submits its Re -candidacy for category “A” of the IMO Council

The Italian Embassy in London announced that the official ceremony for the presentation of Italy’s candidacy for re-election in category “A” of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the two-year period 2026–2027 took place at its headquarters

“The event represented an important moment of maritime diplomacy and reaffirmed Italy’s central role in the global maritime governance system,” the Embassy said in a statement.

Italy’s deep bond with the sea

The meeting was opened by Inigo Lambertini, Ambassador of Italy to the United Kingdom and Permanent Representative of Italy to the IMO, the IMSO and the IOPC Funds, who underlined the country’s deep bond with the sea and its active and constructive role within the IMO since 1957.

Member Category ‘A’ since its inception

“The Italian maritime sector is of strategic importance to our economy, contributing significantly to our international trade,” said Ambassador Lambertini, noting that “since its inception, Italy has been a founding member of the IMO Council Category ‘A’, a testament to our unwavering dedication to promoting safer, more secure and environmentally friendly global maritime transport.”

The ceremony was also attended by the Secretary General of the IMO, Arsenio Antonio Domínguez Velasco. Also present were numerous representatives of the IMO member states, diplomatic figures, naval attachés, international port authorities and a qualified representation of the Italian maritime industry.

The Aide Mémoire

During the presentation, the Aide Mémoire was illustrated, which illustrates the strengths of the Italian candidacy, including:

Italy’s central role as a maritime hub in the Mediterranean, where global trade routes converge;
European leadership in Ro-Ro transport and the cruise market (40% of Mediterranean traffic);
Strong commitment to the ecological transition, with investments in alternative fuels, reduction of emissions and protection of marine biodiversity;
Constant attention to the safety of human life at sea (Sar), the digitalisation of maritime transport (National Maritime Single Window, e-Navigation, Vts) and cybersecurity;
Qualified contribution to international maritime training, with particular attention to the revision of the STCW Convention;
Convinced support for the IMO Member State Audit Scheme (Imsas) and audits based on “Goal-Based Standards”.

Italy, with over 12 million Gross Tonnage of registered gross tonnage, is among the top 20 merchant fleets worldwide. The country has a strategic port network, with 16 core ports in the Ten-T network, and is at the forefront of the digitalization and automation of port and on-board services, actively supporting the development of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (Mass).
