Japan-based shipping company K Line announced to use biofuel in three of its vehicle carriers namely VIKING OCEAN, VIKING DIAMOND, and VIKING CORAL
. In July this year, the three vessels chartered by Gram Car Carriers (GCC) will be supplied with biofuel during their refueling process in Singapore.
Earlier, in 2021, K lines started testing biofuel on its ships. K Line used B24 marine biofuel supplied by an energy company bp on the bulk carrier CAPE TSUBAKI, with the support of the vessel’s charterer, JFE Steel Corporation.
This B24 marine biofuel is a blend of 24% fatty acid methyl ester and very low sulphur fuel oil.
Two years later, in August 2023, K-Line carried out the biofuel trial using 700 tons of UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester), a B24-based biofuel, on a bulk carrier CAPE AMAL.
The biofuel was supplied for the trial by an energy company, Peninsula.
Subsequently, on 16 May 2024, K Line conducted its first trial of using B100 marine biofuel on the car carrier, APOLLON HIGHWAY.
The B100 marine biofuel was supplied by an energy company World Fuel Service.
These initiatives mark K Line’s commitment to undergo energy transition and reduce emission.
