The detention order against the vessel coming from the Indian port of Vishakhapatnam, which arrived at the port on April 20 with a cargo of steel blooms, and which was supposed to leave its moorings on April 26 to head for the Spanish port of Algeciras, was issued by PSC inspectors after a detailed inspection to verify that the vessel and its crew fully met the requirements of the applicable international conventions on extended navigation safety, in particular, also with regard to checks on living and working conditions on board.
11 irregularities
The inspection by Coast Guard officials revealed 11 irregularities, 2 of which were very serious. In detail, serious violations of the on-board safety management system (ISM) were detected, as well as deficiencies relating to fire prevention and fighting and accident prevention devices. The same vessel, moreover, had already been subjected just a few days ago to a similar inspection by flag officials who had found 28 irregularities.

The vessel is still docked in port
The vessel is still docked in port waiting for the minimum standards to be restored in order to be authorized to sail again. Only after all the deficiencies found have been rectified and subsequently verified by officials of the flag State, the vessel can be subjected to a new PSC inspection for the “release” and authorization to depart.
Port of Piombino
It is noteworthy that the Port of Piombino has two major vocations, industry and tourism. In fact, Piombino has always been the site of an important industrial production district, where the main companies are controlled by some of the most important multinational groups in the world. The other historical vocation of the port is closely linked to the tourist sector, i.e. as a port of call for the wonderful islands of the Mediterranean.
