The Forum was proud to witness first-hand Malta’s signing of the Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships which took place during a special 2nd signing ceremony of the Convention held in Malta, at Verdala Palace.
This was considered as an exceptional event for the Treaty Book to leave New York again for a 2nd signing ceremony after the first signing ceremony was held in Beijing in September 2023. Malta was joined by Croatia, Cyprus, Spain, Italy, Côte d’Ivoire and Antigua and Barbuda.
Dr Ann Fenech, a founding member and Director of the MMF, in her capacity as President of the CMI – Comité Maritime International and co-ordinator for the Project at UNCITRAL: United Nations Commission on International Trade Law gave a Keynote Address wherein she underlined the importance of the Convention and appealed to the European Union for its urgent ratification.
She said “International shipping is already facing monumental challenges, and the European Maritime Industry looks to the Commission for support.”
“The Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships is like a brand-new 27 thousand TEU containership. Her construction drawings and plans are the Draft by CMI, she was built by a robust shipyard—UNCITRAL, she is now fully loaded. Enable us to discharge her at her discharge port by providing a speedy ratification process,” Dr Fenech concluded.
The Forum was further represented at the Ceremony by the Chairman, Godwin Xerri; Vice Chairman, Alex Montebello and CEO, Kevin J Borg.
The Malta Maritime Forum brings together all the stakeholders in the Maltese Maritime Industry. Its objective is to create the necessary synergies and expand Malta’s network as an important international maritime hub.
