MSC and GNV signs order for 4 new Ro-Pax ferries in China

They will be powered by LNG and will be able to accommodate up to 2,500 people on board and 3,500 linear meters of garage; in terms of tonnage they will be the largest ships of the company and the most capacious in the Mediterranean.

GNV, part of the MSC Group, has signed a shipbuilding order with Guangzhou Shipbuilding International in Guangzhou, China, with which the Genvöse ferry company and the MSC Group for four new LNG powered Ro-Pax ferries.

Increase its fleet by 8 new units

This new order, added to that of the previous order, will ensure that the company will increase its fleet by 8 new units between 2025 and 2030”The works are scheduled to start in 2026 and the delivery of the first ship will take place in the first months of 2028, followed by the others every six months

A gross tonnage of the new units

The new units will have a gross tonnage of approximately 71,300 tons, a length of 237 meters and a width of 33 meters, will be able to accommodate up to 2,500 people (including passengers and crew) and will be equipped with 527 cabins and 3,500 linear meters of garage  space.will be the largest and most spacious in the Mediterranean by tonnage at 71,300 tons. In terms of tonnage, they will be the largest ships of the company and the most capacious on the Mediterranean.

Construction will begin in 2026

Construction  will begin in 2026, with the first ship delivered within the first months of 2028 and the following ones every six months. The new ferries, each with a capacity of 2,500 people, over 500 cabins, The new vessels will all be powered by LNG, ensuring a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 50 per cent per unit compared to the previous generation.”The four newly ordered ships will represent an evolution compared to those from the previous order, which includes GNV Polaris and GNV Orion,” said GNV.

AS for GNV Virgo and GNV Aurora

The company also specifies that, as for GNV Virgo and GNVAurora, currently under construction at the same shipyard and due to arrive by the end of 2025 – 11 months ahead of schedule – “the new units will all be powered by LNG and equipped with cutting-edge environmental technologies that will guarantee a reduction in CO2 emissions of over 50% per transportable unit compared to previous-generation ones.

The investment made for this order of four additional ferries has not been disclosed but should amount to approximately 600 million euros overall; the purchase in this case should also take place directly by the MSC Group which will then bareboat charter the new constructions to Gnv.
