Hengli Group chosen for the construction of 10 mega max units to be delivered from 2028
MSC has once again chosen one of its new favorite shipyards, Hengli Heavy Industry, previously known as STX Dalian, for ten mega maxes of 24,000 TEUs.To bring the order book beyond 2 million TEUs
Cost will be around 2.35 billion dollars
An agreement whose cost will be around 2.35 billion dollars, a figure within the reach of a company that is estimated to have earned around 1.8 billion dollars a month during the third quarter of this year, according to the liner’s results in the third quarter.
Signed a strategic cooperation
MSC signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Hengli Heavy earlier this year, under which the Switzerland-based company would use the yard for orders of ships, engines, repair and conversion work. In September, MSC ordered 10 21,000 TEU dual-fuel LNG ships from the Chinese shipyard.
This latest series of 24,000 Teu ships will be delivered from 2028 and, once confirmed, will bring MSC’s order book to 2.13 million Teu, which is larger than the current fleet of Ocean Network Express (One), the sixth largest company in the world.
For years, MSC has been preparing to operate almost autonomously on the main east-west trade routes, which will happen starting from 1 February next year, when its ten-year partnership with Maersk in the 2M alliance comes to an end.
In addition to newbuildings, MSC has now exceeded 400 purchases of second-hand ships since it embarked on a historic expansion campaign in August 2020. MSC has come to hold a 20% share of the world’s hold and was the first to break through the wall of 5 million TEUs and then that of 6.
According to Alphaliner this week three more second-hand ships were purchased by the company founded by Gianluigi Aponte.
