Maritime Tickers mourns the deceased and offers its condolences to his family and to the logistics and shipping community in Italy

The logistics and shipping industry in Italy is mourning the death of Gianfranco Mercandino, a Genoese entrepreneur who helped to innovate the sector of supplies and services for the maritime industry over the last thirty years. He was 49 years old and had been battling an illness for some time. He was due to turn 50 this coming September.

His professional career in 1995 at Mercandino Sr

Mercandino was born in 1976 and began his professional career in 1995 at Mercandino Srl, the family business founded in the 1960s that is a key player in the marine supply sector. Mercandino's career has been characterised by a forward-looking mindset and an entrepreneurial vision focused on innovation and growth

In late 2012, he personally oversaw the merger between Mercandino Srl and Eurosupply, creating Global Marine Supplies (GMS). GMS has since established itself as one of Italy’s leading operators in the sector, with a service network spanning numerous Mediterranean ports.

The logistics of marine spare parts

His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Ged Transport in 2003, a company specialising in the logistics of marine spare parts. This venture was born from the clear insight that there was a need for a highly specialised service within a strategic segment of the maritime industry. A total of 44 people are now employed by the company, which runs an 18,000-square-metre covered logistics facility in Stazzano (in the province of Alessandria), a 900-square-metre warehouse in Sampierdarena, and an operational headquarters at the World Trade Center in Genoa.

The industry has lost one of its most respected leaders,

Determined, enthusiastic, and always ready to tackle new challenges, Mercandino built his business on a simple principle: a company's true asset is its people. Consequently, he has invested wholeheartedly in the professional development of his team and has fostered solid, long-lasting relationships with employees, clients, and partners in Italy and abroad.

The industry has lost one of its most respected leaders, and the companies he helped build will feel his absence more than ever. His legacy is that of an entrepreneur who turned ideas and vision into solid business realities, always upholding the values of integrity, generosity, and respect for others.
