According to Cruise Industry News, the global orderbook will lead to 20,000 hires next year and 75,000 by the end of 2035
With 15 new cruise ships coming into service next year, cruise lines are expected to hire over 20,000 new crew members in 2025 (including rotational staff) just to be precise.
According to the Cruise Industry News Global Cruise Ship Index, new builds will add nearly 40,000 guest beds to the market. With an average guest-to-crew ratio of 2.5 to 1, new ships will therefore require over 16,000 crew members.
According to Cruise Industry News’ order book, cruise lines will need to hire about 75,000 crew members by 2036 for new ships alone. A total of 62 new cruise ships will come into service by then, including several ships with more than 2,000 crew members.
Norwegian Cruise Line will see a substantial increase in its onboard workforce, with more than 16,000 crew members planned for eight new builds. With seven new ships coming through 2028, MSC Cruises Group will also need about 11,000 new employees for new builds alone. After ordering five large ships this year,
Carnival Cruise Line is expected to increase its workforce by more than 10,500 crew members. With three new ships in the Icon and Oasis classes,
Royal Caribbean International will need nearly 9,000 additional crew members for the new ships. Pursuing an aggressive growth strategy
Disney Cruise Line and its partner OLC are expected to hire more than 6,000 new staff members in the coming years.
The 62 new ships will add nearly 150,000 new berths to the market and boast a guest-to-crew ratio of 2.4 to 1.
