King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam achieved exceptional operational performance during the first half of 2024, recording a 37,40% increase in total container exports and imports, reaching 1,534,961 TEUs compared to 1,117,133 TEUs during the same period last year, 2023.
Additionally, the total number of transshipments rose by 87,87%, reaching 37,806 TEUs compared to 20,124 TEUs last year.
Containers grew
The number of exported containers at the port increased by 39,07%, reaching 624,710 TEUs compared to 449,219 TEUs during the same period in 2023. Similarly, the number of imported containers grew by 34,68%, reaching 872,445 TEUs compared to 647,790 TEUs last year.
The total cargo throughput tonnage increased by 37,06%, reaching 15,565,138 tons compared to 11,356,471 tons during the same period in 2023.
General cargo
General cargo reached a total of 2,580,974 tons, marking a 49,47% increase from last year when it was 1,726,804 tons. Bulk solid cargo also saw an increase of 2,63%, reaching 5,986,089 tons compared to 5,832,807 tons last year.
Maritime activity
Moreover, maritime activity rose by 19,97%, reaching 1,430 ships compared to 1,192 ships in 2023. The number of cars saw an increase of 109,82%, reaching 363,167 cars compared to 173,086 cars last year. Conversely, the number of passengers decreased by 89.11%, reaching 4,194 passengers compared to 38,518 passengers last year.
Infrastructure development
It is worth noting that King Abdul Aziz Port in Dammam has undergone several significant infrastructure development efforts in 2024. The port received 21 new QC & RTG cranes to efficiently handle advanced and large vessels.
NTLS
It was also equipped with 80 electric trucks as per a contract signed between Saudi Global Ports “SGP” and SANY, a leading Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer.
This makes it the largest port in the Middle East to have such a number of electric trucks, turning it into a flexible and sustainable logistics hub, in line with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy “NTLS,” solidifying the Kingdom’s standing as a global logistics hub bridging three continents.
G4 Logistics
The port continued to play its pivotal role in supporting commercial activities by adding six new maritime shipping services in cooperation with major global shipping lines.
Additionally, a contract was signed between “Mawani” and “G4 Logistics” to establish silos and warehouses for grain storage, with an investment value of up to 200 million riyals and an area of 100,000 square meters, enhancing food security in the Kingdom.
The port’s efforts were culminated by winning the “Port of the Year” award at the 19th ShipTek Awards held in Khobar in May 2024.
