Ismailia: April 16, 2025  : Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly attended the Suez Canal Authority’s “Excellence Day” celebration on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment; Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development; Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority ACA; Major General Akram Galal, Governor of Ismailia; Walid Gamal El-Din, Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone; and Major General Mamdouh Jaafar, Commander of the Second Field Army. The celebrations were held to announce the Authority’s launch of several maritime services,MoU with success partners, and new projects.

Announcing a package of projects

The celebration included the announcement of the Suez Canal Authority’s launch of a service to collect and remove waste from ships transiting the canal, the inauguration of the floating bentonite factory, the opening of the Suez Canal Academy for Creativity and Excellence, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding MoU with the Spanish company Tejedor Lazaro Group in the fields of fisheries, aquaculture, management and operation of fish and shrimp farms, and feed production. A number of the Authority’s maritime units were also lined up.

Strategic relationships with major shipping lines

The Chairman of SCA emphasized  :The Suez Canal Authority’s commitment to continuing its efforts to achieve continuous and effective communication with all its clients and to build on its strategic relationships with major shipping lines, international shipping chambers, and influential organizations in the international maritime community, especially during times of crisis.

264 ships have rerouted their routes to transit the Suez Canal

This has resulted in enhanced cooperation with its clients, and 264 ships have rerouted their routes to transit the Suez Canal instead of the Cape of Good Hope since the beginning of February. The Chairman of the Authority noted a slight improvement in navigation indicators during March 2025 compared to navigation statistics for January of the same year. Ability to confront challenges and overcome crises.

Admiral Rabie emphasized that the Suez Canal has proven its leading role in the maritime transport industry over the past years, and its ability to confront various challenges and overcome crises. This is reflected in the Canal’s navigation statistics for the period (2019-2024), which recorded the transit of 121,902 vessels, with a total net tonnage of 7.154 billion tons, achieving total revenues for the period totaling $39.919 billion.

He then reviewed the development of the SCA‘s performance during the period from 2019 to 2024, explaining that net ship tonnage reached 1.207 billion tons in 2019, then declined slightly to 1.169 billion tons in 2020 despite the COVID-19 crisis. It then rose again, reaching 1.275 billion tons in 2021, then 1.410 billion tons in 2022, reaching a record 1.568 billion tons in 2023, before being affected by current conditions and declining by 66.5% to 525 million tons in 2024.

In terms of ship numbers

In terms of ship numbers, the canal recorded the passage of 18,880 ships in 2019 and 18,830 ships in 2020. This number then increased to 20,694 ships in 2021 and 23,851 ships in 2022, setting a new record of 26,434 ships in 2023, while navigation statistics through the canal recorded a 50% decline, reaching 13,213 ships in 2024 compared to 2023, due to the Red Sea crisis.

Regarding revenues in dollar terms

Regarding revenues in dollar terms, the canal generated $5.804 billion in 2019 and $5.606 billion in 2020. Revenues then increased to $6.334 billion in 2021 and $7.934 billion in 2022, reaching its highest annual revenue in history, reaching $10.250 billion in 2023. Navigation through the canal was affected by regional tensions, and revenues in 2024 decreased by 61% to $3.991 billion compared to 2023. Admiral Rabie added that the escalating challenges and conditions in the region did not hinder the canal’s continued operations.

On the other hand Guy Platten, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping ICS stressed that the Suez Canal remains, without a doubt, one of the most important and strategic sea routes in the world.Reminding everyone of the Ever Given container ship incident, which highlighted the importance of the Suez Canal for global shipping and the sustainability of logistics chains.

End the Red Sea crisis as soon as possible

He pointed out that the Suez Canal has faced major challenges and fluctuations over the past few years, but it has remained resilient in the face of challenges. He expressed his hope that the Red Sea crisis would end as soon as possible, Stressing that the lives of  seafarers cannot be put at risk simply for doing their work.

Egypt’s vision to become a center for the production of green fuels

Platten praised Egypt’s vision to become a center for the production of green fuels at competitive prices  Noting that access to new types of fuel that are free of emissions will be of paramount importance to the maritime transport industry. He added that the growing interest in the environmental dimensions of the maritime shipping industry increases the importance and role of the Suez Canal in achieving sustainable development for global trade.
