SCA : Successful towing of the oil tanker SOUNION

The tugboat Baraka and three other tugboats belonging to SCA participated in the towing and securing operation of the tanker

Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of  SCA announced today, Monday, the success of the towing operation of the oil tanker SOUNION by four tugboats  on its journey through the Suez Canal as part of the southern convoy coming from the Red Sea and heading to Greece. The ship, which flies the Greek flag, is 274 meters long, 50 meters wide, and has a draft of 31 feet.

Taking complex measures

Rabie explained that the preparations for the tanker towing operation required taking complex measures over several months to unload the tanker’s cargo of 150,000 tons of crude oil before allowing it to cross the canal due to the dangerous situation of the tanker after it was attacked in the Red Sea last August, which resulted in a massive fire in the command room, the engine room and the living rooms, and the failure of the control and command devices in a way that made it difficult for the tanker to sail, increasing the risks of pollution, oil spills or explosion.

Unloading the cargo in the Suez Canal

Added that the process of unloading the cargo in the Suez Canal area was subject to complex procedures carried out by the rescue companies AMBERY and MEGA TUGS appointed by the tanker’s owners, as they worked through a joint action plan in cooperation and under the full supervision of the Authority’s maritime rescue team to unload the cargo onto another similar tanker according to accurate unloading rates and calculations to prevent any damage or division in the tanker’s hull.
