The Ro-Ro built in China is the 13th of the GG5G class
The Ro-Ro Eco Salerno, the thirteenth (and penultimate) vessel of the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) series, was delivered on 3 December by the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing: “The Eco Salerno becomes part of a pioneering fleet of ships hybrid Ro-Ro vehicles, further strengthening Grimaldi‘s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the naval sector.”
The GT 67,311 vessel
The GT 67,311 vessel, flying the Italian flag, is 238 m long and 34 m wide, offering 7,800 lane metres of cargo capacity across seven decks (incl. two hoistable). Like its sisters, it is equipped with a scrubber and lithium ion batteries that allow the storage of the energy generated during navigation, to be used to power the ship during stops at the dock.
Reach the Zero emission
Moreover, these ships, when docked at port, reach the Zero emission at port target. This is achieved by using the electricity stored in large lithium batteries that have a collective capacity of 5 megawatt-hours(MWh), ensuring no pollution during the port operation. The batteries get recharged during the ship’s voyage using shaft generators and 350 m2 of solar panels.
Their carbon footprint
According to the Neapolitan shipping line, the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) vessels consume the same amount of fuel as the previous Ro-Ro line-up at the same speed, effectively halving their carbon footprint per transported unit as they offer double the freight space.
