The tragedy of Shadow ship discovered adrift off the Baltic coast

A sanctioned oil tanker went dark over undersea cables and then drifted for nearly two months. The Eventin has been seized and Windward has exclusive insights.

The Crude Oil Tanker ‘Eventin’,  (built in 2006 ) believed to be part of Russia’s efforts to evade sanctions, was already towed into safer waters by a German tugboat in January after it was discovered adrift in heavy seas off the Baltic coast

German customs authorities have seized the Panama-flagged tanker ‘Eventin‘, (IMO 9308065, MMSI 352001758) 248-meter-long vessel which has been anchored off Germany’s Baltic Sea coast since January.

The ship is believed to be part of Russia’s so called ‘shadow fleet’ of aging tankers of uncertain ownership and safety practices that Western governments say Moscow has resorted to using to dodge sanctions and keep oil revenue flowing

Security sources told German news magazine Der Spiegel that a confiscation order was issued by the General Customs Directorate and that both the tanker and the approximately 100,000 tons of crude oil, valued at over €40 million, will now become German property.

According to the report, the German government decided to confiscate the ship rather than let it go after it was listed as part of Russia’s shadow fleet in February.

The vessel was only recently added to Annex XLII of Regulation EU 833/2014 under the EU’s so-called 16th sanctions package of 25 February 2025, because of reported evidence that it had been used to “transport crude oil or petroleum products listed in Annex XXV originating in or exported from Russia, and to engage in irregular and high-risk transport practices”.

Russian shadow fleet

According to the publication, Eventin is part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet, which the Kremlin uses to circumvent Western sanctions. Eventin was originally named Storviken and sailed under the Norwegian flag in 2006, then was registered in Panama as Charvi in 2022, and received its current name in June 2024. It also repeatedly turned off its tracking systems — a common practice for shadow fleet vessels.

Windward’s Gen AI agent, MAI Expert™, flagged the vessel’s complex ownership trail, including ties to sanctioned entities in the UAE and Switzerland. This level of obfuscation suggests an intentional effort to mask true ownership and evade sanctions.
