Launched last year, the world’s largest fast ferry, the Express 5, recorded its third accident. The latest occurred at the exit of the port of Ronne, on the island of Bornholm, in the Baltic Sea, where the catamaran carrying passengers hit a breakwater. Ship stopped and still no date to predict its return to service. ٍ according to Shipping Italy
Collision accident
The collision occurred while the Express 5 fast ferry was en route to Ystad, Sweden. The collision with the breakwater of the port caused considerable damage along the starboard side, with the hull deformed and in some places damaged by long gashes.
Only a lot of fear for the passengers, who heard a loud noise. Fortunately with no injuries, the ship returned safely to the dock for an inspection.
Damage and loss
The damage to the aluminum hull is significant enough to force the Express 5 to interrupt its service and be placed in dry dock for repairs. At the moment the other fast ferry of the Danish shipping company Bornholmslinjen, Express 1, is currently in the pipeline and is not available to replace Express 5.
Express 5 is the largest catamaran fast ferry
Express 5 is the largest catamaran fast ferry in the world and was built specifically for the conditions of the Baltic Sea. With 450 parking spaces and 1,625 passengers, it surpassed the previous ship on the route by several meters in length and by several hundred passengers.
Collisions and mysterious fate
Having entered service on the Ystad-Bornholm route in April 2023, it has since struck fixed objects three times: in addition to the breakwater,
On 8 June 2024, the vessel moored on its side in Ronne suffered strong winds which overloaded the winches of tension, which came loose, releasing the ropes and causing the ship to drift to the opposite pier.
Furthermore, according to local media, the catamaran suffered a complete blackout twice: once in January and the other in February.
It is not known when the high-speed line will resume service. Bornholm residents still have access to two conventional ferries, which take around three hours longer to travel the same route.
