A US-flagged vessel was stopped in the port of Gioia Tauro after an inspection on board by the Coast Guard’s Port State Control Inspection Unit reportedly found serious irregularities. It is probably the container ship Sagamore, used by the US Army to transport military material, which left the port of Gioia Tauro this afternoon.

According to the maritime authority, the vessel was found to lack the mandatory certification required by Article 12 of Regulation (EU) No. 1257/2013 on ship recycling, which requires shipowners to provide non-EU ships arriving in EU ports with an inventory of hazardous materials and the related certificate of conformity. Further irregularities were also found with reference to navigation safety and compliance with maritime labor regulations.

Prevented the vessel from continuing navigation
Following the violations ascertained, a detention order was issued which prevented the vessel from continuing navigation, making its departure subject to the restoration of the safety conditions required by international legislation and, in implementation of the provisions of Legislative Decree 99/2020 on ship recycling, a fine of 10,000 euros was imposed on the Commander and the Company owning the vessel.
