Grimaldi : ‘Green’ lighting for the Port of Igoumenitsa

We will make Igoumenitsa a green port“: this was the statement made by Managing Director Emanuele Grimaldi at the end of 2023, when the Grimaldi Group acquired a majority stake in the Igoumenitsa Port Authority. Soon after this announcement, several energy efficiency projects were planned and implemented.

In line with this commitment, the relamping of the Greek port’s areas was successfully completed in February this year. The replacement of old sodium lamps with new, more efficient LED lights will result in annual energy savings of over 50% for lighting.

These savings will be greater still thanks to remote control and monitoring technology, which will allow the light intensity to be adjusted remotely based on the port’s actual needs.

The new lighting system has been designed to ensure uniform light distribution and provide appropriate illumination levels according to different usage requirements, while optimizing energy consumption.

Energy efficiency: Grimaldi working on two new projects

On the Other hand the Grimaldi Group has secured funding from the European Commission for two new research and development projects under ZEWT – Zero Emission Waterborne Transport, a public-private co-programmed partnership between the European Commission and maritime transport sector stakeholders. The initiative aims to fully decarbonize waterborne transport by 2050 and is part of Horizon Europe, the European Union’s framework program for research and innovation.

 About :The port of Igoumenitsa

The port of Igoumenitsa is geographically the closest port of Greece with Italy and the Balkan countries of the Adriatic Sea, thus becoming a major connection for passengers and goods traffic, to and from Western Europe. Annually, 2,5 million passengers and about 250,000 trucks are moving from the port of Igoumenitsa. The main ports connected directly are the Italian ports of Bari, Brindisi, Ancona, Venice, Trieste and Ravenna, as well as Corfu Island.

The new Port of Igoumenitsa was inaugurated on September 19, 2003. It is located on the southern side of the land harbor zone, outside the urban fabric of the city and next to the municipal apartment of Ladochori.
