A man ( A 30-year-old ) lost his life in tragedy accident in his thirties, helming a pilot boat, lost his life this afternoon, February 24, 2026, off the port of Livorno. A pilot boat capsized around 2:30 PM, for reasons still under investigation, possibly due to a collision with the pleasure vessel Calypso.(IMO 9907641, MMSI 511101351- sailing under the flag of Palau. ) The latter is a 61.5-meter Giga yacht, which the pilot had boarded shortly beforehand for routine port entry maneuvers.
The pilot boat driver (the jargon term for the person who drives the vessel for transportation and to facilitate the pilot's boarding of a ship entering or leaving the port) was on board and drowned when the vessel overturned. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Investigations are underway to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident and clarify the cause of the vessel's capsize.
"On behalf of the entire Livorno port community and all the employees of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority, we wish to express our immense grief and deepest sympathy to the family and colleagues of the pilot boat driver serving in the port, who died this afternoon in an accident whose causes are still being investigated." These were the words of Davide Gariglio, President of the Port Authority, regarding the tragedy that has struck the port and the pilots' profession.
According to the CGIL Livorno, "once the causes of the incident have been ascertained, it would be appropriate to initiate a comprehensive discussion, including the Maritime Directorate, on how to improve workplace safety at the Livorno port."
On the other hand Paolo Capone, general secretary of the UGL, and Giuseppe Dominici, regional secretary of the UGL Tuscany, "it is necessary to decisively strengthen prevention activities, intensify inspections, and invest in training and a culture of safety. Only through a concrete and shared commitment between institutions and social partners can we effectively combat a phenomenon that devalues the dignity of work and represents a defeat for everyone. Concrete and immediate action is needed to protect workers and ensure that no one loses their life while carrying out their work."
