An engine failure was suffered by a 119-meter, Barbados-flagged dry cargo ship en route from Yalova to Aliağa off Gelibolu while the Dardanelles were being transited. The captain reported the breakdown by radio to the Çanakkale Strait Vessel Traffic Services Directorate.

The tugs KURTARMA-18 and KURTARMA-19, operated by Türkiye's Directorate General of Coastal Safety (KEGM), were dispatched to the area following the alert. Other ships scheduled to transit the strait were informed of the incident, and traffic was managed safely. With KURTARMA-18 providing the steering and KURTARMA-19 in support, the disabled ship was towed under pilot escort and safely anchored at the Doğanarslan anchorage. There were no reported injuries, and no pollutants entered the water.

The Dardanelles Strait

The Dardanelles is one of the busiest sea routes between the Black Sea and the Sea of Islands. It carries a lot of grain, fuel, and other goods. Supply-chain operators closely monitor engine failures in this narrow, current-swept waterway because they can lengthen transit times and trigger one-way passage restrictions.

The deployment of KEGM's emergency response tugs is a standard procedure for situations involving breakdown and drift in the straits. Their rapid intervention preserves passage safety by preventing groundings or collisions with other traffic.

Notably, the ship had previously run aground off Kilitbahir in March 2022 while transporting corn from Romania to Italy. It was flying the Comoros flag at the time and was later refloated by Turkish rescue tugs.
