The national group USB Lavoro Privato, Transport sector, has decided to give its full support to the dockworkers' mobilisation

Protests in the land and maritime sectors will address not only geopolitical and economic concerns over the cost of living, but also the restrictions on the right to strike imposed by Law 146/90 on essential public services.

Eight Italian ports will stop on 30 October due to a strike.

On October 30, eight Italian ports will stop for a general strike called by the Unione Sindacale di Base (Base Union), which has joined the second international day of protest for port workers . In a statement, USB explains that the initiative follows the first protests on 6 February. These were motivated by the refusal to subordinate the entire logistics and transport chain to what is being defined as a war economy. Specifically, they challenged the operational use of maritime infrastructure for the transportation of war cargo. According to USB’s analysis, the decision directly impacts workers’ contractual conditions, as the growth in rearmament expenditure is blamed for reducing public resources for wages and services, fuelling inflation and the erosion of purchasing power. Added to this are concerns within the sector over the growing push towards dock automation and the deregulation of contracts

A press conference was held in Rome by the international coalition 'Ports in Action'.

On 15 October, the international coalition 'Ports in Action' held a press conference in Rome. Those in attendance included representatives from CGT Ports and Docks (France), ENEDEP (Greece), LAB (the Basque Country), LIMAN-IS (Turkey), ODT (Morocco) and FSUI (Forward Seamen's Union of India). Representatives from Italy were also present, including ORSA Porti and USB Mare e Porti. The updated membership map presented at the meeting provides maritime operators with a clear picture of infrastructure at risk of blockage.

The strike will affect key ports for import-export

In Italy, the strike will affect major import-export and transhipment ports, including Ancona, Civitavecchia, Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Livorno, Ravenna, Salerno and Trieste. The unions declare that they represent over 40% of containerised activity in the Mediterranean, with a catchment area of approximately 3 million TEUs handled. The mobilisation is also seeing significant participation from ports in France and India, as well as from maritime terminals in Cyprus, Ireland, Morocco, Mexico, the Basque Country, Greece and Turkey.

The entire logistics sector will also be involved.

The October 30 strike will also be participated in by the entire logistics sector. The national group USB Lavoro Privato, Transport sector, has decided to give its full support to the dockworkers' mobilisation, which will also involve logistics, freight transport, and local public transport workers. Nationally, protests in the land and maritime sectors will address not only geopolitical and economic concerns over the cost of living, but also the restrictions on the right to strike imposed by Law 146/90 on essential public services. The aim is to unite the entire freight transport sector behind a single set of demands.
