Gianluigi Aponte, founder and president of MSC, landed in Genoa today from Geneva and departed just after lunch. The MSC Group's private plane did not go unnoticed at Cristoforo Colombo Airport, and some meeting participants confirmed its visit to the Lighthouse at Palazzo San Giorgio, headquarters of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority.
Reports indicate that the private visit, attended by Port Authority President Matteo Paroli, Liguria Regional President Marco Bucci, and Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi, focused on the future of Genoa Airport and the Port Master Plan. The meeting lasted less than two hours.
The privatisation of Cristoforo Colombo Airport is on MSC's agenda, and the Port Authority (the majority shareholder) will soon release a tender for this purpose. The airport's board of directors recently reviewed two independent economic assessments, commissioned separately by the shareholders, to value the company. The analysis by PwC (commissioned by the Port Authority) estimated the value to be between €14.9 and €15.9 million, while the appraisal by the University of Genoa (commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce) identified a range of between €15.4 and €17 million.

Before preparing the tender, we presented the two reports, with the confirmed objective of publishing the public tender this autumn. "The two independent evaluations provide a coherent picture and confirm the value of Genoa Airport. This gives us a solid foundation on which to confidently approach the public tender process and market comparison. We believe the airport has potential for an industrial partner to invest in, providing expertise, commercial relationships and infrastructure development projects,' Paroli stated. 'Our task,' he added, 'is to establish a process that can identify the best proposals and provide the airport with prospects for sustained growth in the interests of the local area and its workers, including creating new jobs.'
At the closed-door meeting with Aponte, who had recently attempted to purchase the Cristoforo Colombo, opposition was expressed by the Chamber of Commerce. The new tender could now lead to a sale with the aim of making Genoa's airport a hub, especially given its synergies with cruise traffic. During the meeting, the new Port Master Plan was likely to have been among the topics discussed.
