Another Tragedy incident in the Med where at least four migrants drowned off the coast of Al-Khums, Libya, on Thursday after two boats carrying 95 migrants capsized. The Libyan Red Crescent reported on Saturday that the first boat was carrying 26 migrants from Bangladesh, four of whom died. The Red Crescent indicated that the second boat was carrying 69 migrants, including two Egyptians and dozens of Sudanese, without specifying their fate.
Port of Al Khums is located about 120km east of the capital Tripoli, and with approximately a population of 200.00 people. The city has Phoenician and Roman roots and became the capital of the Roman province of Africa in the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus. The port is located 1km from the centre of Al Khums.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Wednesday that at least 42 migrants were missing and presumed dead after a rubber boat capsized near the Bouri oil field, an offshore facility located northwest of the Libyan coast . Libya has become a major transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 following a NATO-backed uprising.
Images released by the Libyan Red Crescent in Al-Khums showed a row of bodies in black plastic bags lying on the ground, while volunteers were seen providing first aid to survivors.Other images showed migrants sitting on the ground after being rescued, covering themselves with thermal blankets.
A Red Crescent statement said its emergency team "participated in the rescue operation in cooperation with the Coast Guard and Port Security in Al-Khums, in addition to recovering the victims' bodies and handling the cases according to established procedures." It is noteworthy in mid-October, a group of 61 bodies of migrants were recovered on the coast west of the Libyan capital, Tripoli. Where the International Organization for Migration ( IOM ) reported in September that at least 50 people died after a fire broke out on a boat carrying 75 Sudanese refugees off the coast of Libya
Several countries, including Britain, Spain, Norway and Sierra Leone, urged Libya at a United Nations meeting in Geneva last week to close detention centers where rights groups say migrants and refugees are subjected to torture, ill-treatment and sometimes murder.
On the other hand on the issue of migration, the Government of National Unity carried out airstrikes on Thursday night on the city of Zawiya, west of the country, targeting migrant boats belonging to smuggling networks. However, local sources confirmed that the strikes missed their targets and damaged boats belonging to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency.
The Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency explained that the bombing targeted its maritime operations department and several patrol boats tasked with combating maritime infiltration, smuggling, and human trafficking. The agency considered the incident a "blatant violation of security and humanitarian norms with direct repercussions for Libyan national security. It also weakens the state's ability to combat smuggling networks and organized crime, and threatens the safety of search and rescue operations at sea."
In a statement released early Friday, the agency demanded an urgent and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible, and hold them fully accountable for the resulting damage and security repercussions.
In mid-October, a group of 61 bodies of migrants were recovered on the coast west of the capital Tripoli. In September, IOM said at least 50 people had died after a vessel carrying 75 Sudanese refugees caught fire off Libya's coast.
The cities along Libya's western coast are considered among the most active areas for smuggling migrants and subsidized fuel, as well as drug trafficking. They also serve as the main departure point for migration journeys to Europe.
