The Italian classification society joins a pioneering initiative for the development of new clean fuel, opening up new perspectives for sustainable marine fuels.

RINA, a company active in certification, inspection, and engineering consultancy, continues its commitment to the ecological transition of the maritime sector with the signing of a major agreement in China.

The company’s industrial division participated in the signing ceremony for the Yushu Green Methanol project: an ambitious initiative that aims to position green methanol as a key fuel for the future of logistics and transportation.

The event, organized by Jilin Huajin Energy

The event, organized by Jilin Huajin Energy, brought together 27 international organizations and partners, demonstrating the widespread interest in developing low-emission solutions. In this context, RINA signed a framework agreement for a comprehensive consulting collaboration, providing its technical, financial, and commercial expertise to support every phase of the project, from conceptual design to feasibility studies.

The Yushu Green Methanol Project

The Yushu Green Methanol Project, with a planned investment of $2.98 billion, promises to be one of the key demonstration bases for green methanol production in China. Located in Wukeshu, Yushu City, the project leverages the region’s abundant biomass resources and the benefits of renewable energy.

Specifically, the project can produce green methanol by generating hydrogen through water electrolysis using renewable energy, combined with carbon capture and synthesis technology, thus achieving carbon-negative and zero-carbon production.

The initiative received strong market support

The initiative has already received strong market support, with long-term purchasing commitments from companies such as Iceland Carbon Cycle International (120,000 tons per year) and Zhongji Xinneng, the latter in partnership with the Korea Green Fuel Alliance (500,000 tons per year), and is paving the way for its entry into the high-end marine fuel markets in Europe and South Korea.
