126 million euros worth of 780Kg cocaine coming from South America and bound for some ports in Italy and Spain

Approximately 780 kg of narcotics were found inside bags of pellets and in the engine compartment of a reefer

A new huge seizure of cocaine took place in the port of Gioia Tauro. The Reggio Calabria Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza, together with the staff of the Customs and Monopolies Agency, announced that they had stopped at the airport a load of pure narcotics with a total weight of 788 kilograms, for a value, once placed on the market, of 126 million euros

The operation

The operation, Fiamme Gialle and Customs explain in a note, took place through the interception, among the thousands of containers moved during the day, of those used to hide the drugs on the basis of the findings that emerged from the risk analysis activities and controls.

Three containers

Three containers in particular – coming from South America and bound for some ports in Italy and Spain – were identified as suspicious. The boxes were first subjected to an x-ray scan and then to an inspection in which the canine units of the Guardia di Finanza of Gioia Tauro were also used

Inside of reefer container

The checks made it possible to identify some blocks of cocaine hidden inside hundreds of bags of pellets; others were instead found inside a cavity created in the engine compartment of a reefer container transporting frozen fish.

Methods which, according to GDF and ADM, indicate how traffickers are making efforts to diversify the techniques for concealing narcotics, in an attempt to pass unscathed through customs and police checks which are systematically carried out in the port area of ​​Gioia Tauro.

On the other hand The president of the Port Authority said “The port of Gioia Tauro is growing exponentially (this year all handling records will probably be broken) and the control and regulatory institutions must be put in place to ensure their tasks and functions in in an appropriate manner, also to support and encourage growth commercial and economic development of the entire territory.”
