Rabie : The ongoing development projects in the waterway have succeeded in raising the rates of navigational safety and increasing the canal’s capacity

Choosing to transit through the Suez Canal saves time and money and reduces harmful carbon emissions, making it the ideal destination for high-quality transit operations.

Admiral General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority SCA stated that the canal witnessed today, Monday, the traffic of the HUA RUI LONG,(IMO 9918121, MMSI 414601000 - sailing under the flag of China.) one of the largest heavy-lift vessels in the world, through the new navigation channel of the canal as part of the southern convoy, after passing through Bab al-Mandab on its journey from Singapore to Denmark.

The ship belongs to the Chinese company Guangzhou Salvage Bureau. It is a modern ship built in 2022. The ship is 252 meters long, 77.7 meters wide, has a draft of 10.5 meters, and a total tonnage of 115,254 tons. It is crossing the canal with the ship NORTHERN ENDEAVOUR on board.

The crossing of the diving vessel is a unique crossing operation, as the width of the vessel exceeds the maximum allowed width for crossing the canal, which is 75 meters, which required taking special navigational measures, as the navigational security operation was carried out by 4 tugboats belonging to the Authority

The chairman of SCA directed the appointment of 6 of the authority’s senior pilots to guide the ship during its passage through the canal, and to provide navigational assistance from the accompanying tugboats, in addition to real-time monitoring from the main traffic office and the pilot stations located along the canal.

A major leap in infrastructure projects

Admirall Rabie emphasized that the success of the qualitative crossing operations reflects the readiness of the Suez Canal to receive various types and sizes of ships and marine units, and also demonstrates the efficiency of the canal pilots and the accumulated experience of the tugboat captains in navigational security.

He heighlight that the Suez Canal has witnessed a major leap in infrastructure projects during the past few years, as the ongoing development projects in the waterway have succeeded in raising the rates of navigational safety and increasing the canal’s capacity, so that the canal remains the fastest, shortest and safest option for qualitative crossing operations. He pointed out in this regard that the Suez Canal received 27 ships of that category during 2025, in addition to the passage of 4 other ships of that category since the beginning of this year.

The project to develop the southern sector

The chairman of SCA pointed out that the new Suez Canal contributed to enhancing the canal’s ability to receive special crossing operations due to its moderate course and few bends. The project to develop the southern sector also succeeded in increasing the navigational safety factor by 28%, as it allowed for an increase in the width of the canal in its area by 40 meters on the eastern side, thereby increasing the canal’s ability to receive high-quality marine units that had not previously crossed.

The ideal destination for large ships

He stressed that choosing to traffic through the Suez Canal achieves savings in time and cost and a reduction in the level of harmful carbon emissions, making it the ideal destination for large ships and special transit operations, noting that the Suez Canal achieved savings of 3,432 nautical miles for this journey compared to other shipping routes.

It is noteworthy that that the diving vessel HUA RUI LONG had crossed the canal empty on its first voyage through the canal in October 2022. Official Spokesperson for the Suez Canal Authority George Safwat stated
