As India accelerates its efforts to modernize and decarbonize its maritime industry, LR will provide strategic and technical guidance

Lloyd’s Register (LR) Advisory has been appointed the Technical Support Unit (TSU) for the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) of the Government of India. LR Advisory will support the country's efforts to create a more sustainable and digitally enabled maritime sector.

India’s maritime sector is experiencing rapid growth, necessitating a robust and forward-looking regulatory framework that can balance expansion with safety, environmental stewardship, and global competitiveness. The TSU model, established under the guidance of the DG Shipping and the Ministry, aims to strengthen institutional capacity through structured policy review, strategic interventions, and systematic process modernization.

Evaluations of current regulatory and governance frameworks

Meanwhile, the TSU will conduct thorough evaluations of current regulatory and governance frameworks. They will identify discrepancies with international conventions and best practices and suggest specific policy and regulatory reforms. Through evidence-based analysis and strategic intervention, the initiative aims to improve regulatory efficiency, transparency, and compliance while strengthening safety and environmental standards.

The Green Port Index

The development of the Green Port Index will be supported by LR Advisory, advice will be given on the refinement of India's Integrated Shipping Policy, and frameworks for onshore power supply will be contributed to. This work will include promoting green shipbuilding and recycling practices, developing national decarbonization capabilities, and facilitating the digital transformation of regulatory processes. These initiatives are part of India’s broader strategy to develop cleaner, more efficient, and globally competitive ports and shipping networks

A one-year initial contract

A one-year initial contract has been agreed upon, with a framework in place to extend the collaboration for up to five years. LR's recent involvement in developing India's National Green Shipping Policy is a key factor in this appointment, which further solidifies the company's global advisory role and underscores its dedication to assisting national authorities in achieving sustainable maritime growth.
