Port Houston reported a 2% year-to-date increase in container volumes through February, along with the advancement of a berth expansion at Bayport Container Terminal. In February, the US Gulf gateway handled 326,799 TEU, bringing the January–February throughput to 696,833 TEU. Total cargo across its eight public terminals increased by 4% in February, reaching 4.38 million short tons.
The Port Commission approved construction of Wharf 1 at Bayport in February. This will add 1,300 linear feet of berth capacity. It will be completed in 2028. Wharf 7 is now open to vessels and has been completed. According to Chief Executive Charlie Jenkins, the new berths will “significantly increase our berth capacity and allow us to handle more cargo than ever before.”
The aim of the expanded infrastructure is to accommodate the largest vessels calling Houston, and it will be equipped with the largest cranes at the port. The number of shares available for purchase was mixed. While container activity in February was flat, January–February TEU volumes rose 2% year over year. Loaded exports increased by 5%, and imports rose by 3% during this period. Meanwhile, dry and liquid bulk volumes climbed 28% and 31%, respectively, in February, while steel volumes fell 27% year to date.

The update follows a strong January, when container traffic reached 370,034 TEU—up 4% year over year—and the highest level ever recorded for the month of January. Full-year 2025 throughput totaled 4,303,345 TEU, which was also up 4%.
Port Houston is the governing body and primary operator of the public terminals along the 52-mile-long Houston Ship Channel in Texas. As the busiest port in the U.S. for foreign waterborne tonnage and the largest on the Gulf Coast, it handles massive amounts of cargo, including containers, steel, and petrochemicals.
