Lamu Port anticipates receiving more ships, as several shipping agents have expressed interest in docking space

Vessels bound for the Middle East are diverting to Lamu Port in Kenya, a surprise refuge along the Strait of Hormuz, where they are discharging cargo. Meanwhile it was stated by the Kenya Ports Authority on Wednesday via X that 74 vessels have been received by Lamu, which is about 340 kilometers (210 miles) north of the much busier Mombasa Port, since the start of the year. That’s nearly a third of the total number of ships it has serviced since opening in 2021. Last year, the port received just two container ships in the first quarter.

With the Strait of Hormuz closed

With the Strait of Hormuz closed, shipping companies have limited access to Dubai's Jebel Ali, which is the busiest container port outside of Asia. They are also avoiding the Red Sea route, opting for the longer trip around southern Africa instead. Consequently, many ships are unloading their cargo in Lamu. "The Port of Lamu is prepared for an increase in vessel arrivals in the coming days," the authority announced on X. They anticipate that this increase will stimulate regional trade and strengthen Lamu's position as a prominent transshipment hub..

The MV Grande Florida Palermo

The MV Grande Florida Palermo (IMO 9782716, MMSI 247440400 -sailing under the flag of Italy. )  arrived in Lamu on Wednesday with a cargo of 3,800 vehicles from Yokohama, Japan. This occurred just days after another car carrier unloaded hundreds of vehicles that were originally destined for Jebel Ali. According to KPA Managing Director William Ruto, another ship is set to offload 5,000 vehicles next week.

Before the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran,

"Lamu Port anticipates receiving more ships, as several shipping agents have expressed interest in docking space," stated Lappset, the agency overseeing the Lamu Port transport corridor. Before the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, Lamu had difficulty attracting business because Ethiopia, Africa's second most populous country after Nigeria, primarily used the port in Djibouti. Additionally, shippers preferred Mombasa because of its road and rail connections to Uganda to the west.

 The Lapsset Corridor project

Lamu is part of a regional infrastructure initiative that includes an oil pipeline running through northwestern Kenya. The Lapsset Corridor project aims to connect pipelines, roads, railways, and airports in Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. However, progress on this plan has been slow, with only three out of the planned 32 berths having been constructed at a cost of approximately $480 million.

Lamu's geographical location.

Another matter that may prove to be a deterrent for potential users is Lamu's geographical location. This picturesque resort town is located about 100 kilometers from the Somali border and has experienced several attacks by al-Shabaab, a militant group with ties to al-Qaeda. Despite these concerns, the port is currently benefiting from the ongoing conflict. Lamu charges $10 per car for storage after the first 10 days, which are free.

A transformative hub for regional trade

Since the beginning of the year, 43 vessels have been received by Lamu as of March 11. By Wednesday, this number had risen to 74. Built to modern global standards and equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure, the Port of Lamu is a world-class maritime facility.

The Port of Lamu is a transformative hub for regional trade and a key component of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. It integrates road networks, a standard gauge railway, an international airport, resort cities, an oil pipeline, and a refinery.
