The international logistics corridor reduces the journey time of over 1,700 kilometres by more than half compared to other land freight methods.

Saudi Railways Company (SAR) has launched an international logistics corridor via freight trains to enhance the resilience of supply chains. The corridor links the ports of the Eastern Province with the Al-Haditha border crossing in northern Saudi Arabia, in the Al-Qurayyat Governorate of the Al-Jawf region. This will improve direct connectivity to Jordan and northern countries in the CSA. The move comes in light of the current circumstances in the region following attacks on Gulf countries and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The transportation of goods from eastern regions

The corridor enables the transportation of goods from eastern regions of the country to the far north, reaching Jordan and other countries bordering northern Saudi Arabia. This international logistics corridor reduces the journey time of over 1,700 kilometres by more than half compared to other land freight methods. With a capacity of over 400 standard containers per train, the corridor enhances the speed and efficiency of transporting goods and supports regional trade by providing a highly efficient land route.

In a related context, Saleh Al-Jasser, the Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistics, said that launching the new logistics corridor via freight trains is a practical way of integrating transport modes. The Saudi Arabian Railway (SAR) will provide high capacity for transporting containers and goods, enhancing direct connectivity between ports, land crossings and regional markets. This will support the diversification of trade routes, enhance the flow of goods, reduce reliance on long-distance trucking and raise the efficiency of logistics and supply chain operations. It will also expand modern transport solutions within the transport and logistics system.

The Saudi Railways Organisation (SAR) has announced that the new rail corridor will connect King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, King Fahd Industrial Port in Jubail and Jubail Commercial Port to the Al-Haditha border crossing, one of the largest in Saudi Arabia. SAR explained that the route enables customers to transport their products from the Eastern Province ports to the Al-Haditha border crossing and on to Jordan and the northern regions of the Kingdom. It also allows for the transportation of goods in the opposite direction, from the Eastern Province ports to the border crossing via the same route.

SAR has confirmed that this step will have a direct logistical impact, with travel times being shortened and thousands of trucks removed from the roads. This will have a positive effect on maintaining the quality of infrastructure and raising safety levels, as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions
