The industry combines maritime travel with leisure and primarily serves the North American and European markets, with major companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival operating in this sector. Royal Caribbean's three Icon-class vessels occupy the top three positions on the list of the world’s largest cruise ships. They are around 6% larger than the previous record-holders, the Oasis-class ships. Today's cruise ships are like floating cities, offering a wide range of amenities and activities. The Legend of the Seas is a new Icon-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, set to debut in July 2026. As the third ship in the Icon class, it will feature 20 decks, 28 dining options and seven pools. Initially offering Mediterranean itineraries, it will then move to the Caribbean. This Royal Caribbean ship is set to become the world’s largest cruise ship. Although it has the same hull design as its sister ships, it has a greater internal volume.
A Category 6 waterpark, seven pools (including the Royal Bay Pool and the Aqua Theatre), and 28+ dining options (such as the Hollywood Land Supper Club) are just some of the main attractions. Guests can also look forward to entertainment such as the much-awaited Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Musical.
In November this year, the ship will sail from Barcelona or Rome to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Measuring 365 metres long by 65 metres wide, the ship has a gross tonnage of 250,800 tonnes and can operate on LNG.

The Star of the Seas is an Icon-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International. With a gross tonnage of 248,663, it is set to be the world's largest cruise ship when it debuts in August 2025. This 20-deck ship, which shares the title with its sister ship Icon of the Seas, features over 40 dining and drinking options, the Category 6 water park and eight themed neighbourhoods.
The vessel is based in Port Canaveral, Florida, and offers a selection of seven-night itineraries in the eastern and western Caribbean. It has the same specifications as the Legend of the Seas, including its carrying capacity. Boasting eight themed neighbourhoods and the largest water park at sea, complete with six slides and a high-altitude rope course, it is sure to impress. With over 40 restaurants and bars, including the Lincoln Park Supper Club and the AquaDome Market, there is something for everyone on board.
The Star of the Seas
Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, features eight distinct areas, seven pools and six record-breaking waterslides in the "Thrill Island" water park. Key attractions include the AquaDome, which hosts aquatic shows, the suspended infinity pool at The Hideaway and 'The Pearl', a massive kinetic art sculpture.
The Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s lead ship of the Icon Class, debuted in January 2024. Measuring 364.75 metres in length and 48.47 metres in width, it has a gross tonnage of 250,800. A total of 7,600 guests can be accommodated on the Icon of the Seas, which has a crew of 2,350. It has 20 decks, seven swimming pools and six water slides. Royal Caribbean claims that the ship boasts the tallest waterfall, waterslide and water park of any cruise ship.The ship was designed by renowned designers and architects, including Wison Butler Architects, Gensler, and Skylab Architecture.

Launched in 2022, the Wonder of the Seas is one of the world's largest cruise ships, operated by Royal Caribbean. Spanning 18 decks and measuring 1,188 feet in length, the ship features eight distinct neighbourhoods, including a dedicated Suite Neighbourhood. It can accommodate up to 6,988 passengers and 2,300 crew members.
Royal Caribbean International's Wonder of the Seas is a colossus of the seas, tipping the scales at a staggering 236,857 gross tonnes. Delivered in January 2022, it began operations later that year The fifth Royal Caribbean Oasis-class vessel can accommodate 6,988 passengers and 2,300 crew members.Each of its four bow thrusters has 7,500 horsepower. The ship can reach cruising speeds of up to 22 knots. Utopia of the Seas is a massive Oasis-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, designed specifically for short, high-energy 3- and 4-night "weekend" getaways from Port Canaveral in Florida. Due for launch in July 2024, the ship will feature over 40 dining and drinking venues, extensive entertainment options and stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay.
In July 2024, this Oasis-class ship was entered into service by Royal Caribbean and was specially designed for 'The World's Biggest Weekend'. Short 3- and 4-night trips to the Bahamas are offered. Measuring 236,473 gross tons, the 362-metre-long ship has 18 decks and can accommodate up to 5,668 guests at double occupancy.
The vessel sails exclusively from Port Canaveral in Orlando, Florida, and visits the cruise line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, on every trip.For a three-night cruise, departure is on a Friday, with visits to Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay. For a four-night weekday cruise, departure is on a Monday, with the option of an additional day at sea or more time in port.

Symphony of the Seas is a massive, family-oriented Oasis-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International, launched in 2018. It revolutionised the industry by introducing 'neighbourhoods', including the Central Park with its live plants, the Boardwalk and the AquaTheater, which feature extensive entertainment, dining options and thrill rides such as the Ultimate Abyss slide.
This was Royal Caribbean’s first Oasis-class vessel and the largest cruise ship when it entered service in 2009.Launched from STX Europe’s Turku Shipyard in 2008, it marked the entry of the new class of vessels into the Royal Caribbean International fleet.The Oasis of the Seas measures 361.6 metres in overall length, 72 metres in height above the waterline and 22.55 metres in depth, with a gross tonnage of 226,838.
With 16 passenger decks, the vessel can accommodate 5,400 passengers at double occupancy and a maximum of 6,296 passengers.Guests can choose from a range of accommodation options, including two-storey loft suites and luxury suites with balconies. The ship introduced many industry-first amenities, including an outdoor Aqua Theatre, an open-air corridor along its entire length and a Central Park filled with eateries.

The Allure of the Seas is a massive Oasis-class cruise ship, owned by Royal Caribbean International. Launched in 2010, it has recently been refurbished. It features seven distinct themed neighbourhoods, including a park with live trees and an AquaTheatre for high-diving shows. There are also numerous activities, such as the Ultimate Abyss slide.
The Allure of the Seas, another 362-metre-long Oasis-class cruise ship, is the tenth biggest cruise ship in the world.The second Royal Caribbean cruise ship in the Oasis-class series, Allure of the Seas was built at the STX Europe shipyards in Turku, Finland. At one time, it was the largest passenger ship in service.
With a gross tonnage of 225,282 tonnes, a height of 72 metres and a maximum beam width of 60.5 metres, the vessel is truly impressive. Allure of the Seas, delivered in October 2010, can accommodate 5,400 passengers at double occupancy .Luxurious features include a two-deck dance hall, a 1,380-seat theatre, an ice skating rink, a concierge club and spa, and fitness facilities.25 dining options are offered by the ship, classes like yoga and tai chi are offered at the Fitness Centre, and several whirlpools, including those overlooking the ocean, are available.

Launched by MSC Cruises in December 2022, the MSC World Europa is a revolutionary, eco-friendly cruise ship and the first of its "World Class" fleet. Powered by LNG, the ship features a distinctive Y-shaped stern, a 104-metre indoor/outdoor promenade, 13 dining venues and state-of-the-art entertainment. The Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France built the largest MSC cruise ship, the MSC World Europa.

The hotel ship began operations on 20 December 2022 and was used as a hotel in Doha during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Measuring 333.3 metres in length, 47 metres in width and 68 metres in height, it has a gross tonnage of 215,863 tonnes. It has 22 decks and can reach speeds of up to 22.7 knots. The ship can accommodate 6,762 guests and has a crew of 2,138
Powered by LNG, it emits considerably less sulphur dioxide, nitric oxide and carbon dioxide than non-LNG-powered vessels. It is also the world’s first cruise ship to implement an LNG-powered fuel cell. The following ships are scheduled to be launched in sequence: MSC World Asia (December 2026), MSC World America (2025) and MSC World Atlantic (2027).
