During Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, the German shipyard Meyer Werft will unveil Project "Vision": a concept study for what the Papenburg shipyard calls "the world's first fully electric, battery-powered cruise ship exceeding 80,000 GT".Rather than a project under construction, it is an applied engineering exercise that the shipyard presents at the cruise industry's largest annual event to showcase its intended technological direction.
The shipyard's principal focus, according to Tim Krug of Meyer Werft's Concept Development Group, is a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of up to 95% compared to a conventional ship. 'We've been thinking about how to use innovation to reduce CO₂ emissions and contribute to decarbonisation,' he said. And not in 50 years. The decision to opt for a full-battery solution on a ship of this size, with a tonnage in excess of 80,000 GT, places Vision in the mid-range of the contemporary cruise market. This aspect of the project represents the most technically ambitious element, as it shifts the focus from the engine to onboard energy management on crossings that, in contrast to coastal ferries, cannot rely on frequent charging."
Meyer Werft has chosen Corvus Energy, a Norwegian supplier with a strong track record in the maritime sector, for battery systems. Fredrik Witte, CEO of Corvus, explains that the collaboration with Meyer Werft and the Vision concept represents 'the natural evolution' of battery technology and sets a benchmark for the cruise industry. The study aims to demonstrate that marine batteries are already a mature technology on a large scale.

The concept study has not yet addressed the issue of energy density in public in detail. While current batteries provide an adequate range for ferries and coastal vessels, for an ocean-going cruise ship, achieving the right balance between storage space, weight, and operational range remains critical. While Meyer Werft presents Vision as technically feasible and market-oriented, the leap from conceptual design to construction order will largely depend on how quickly the advanced battery cell industry manages to narrow the gap between these two variables.
Project 'Vision' introduces new architectural approaches to cruise ship design. The vertical shaft for exhaust treatment can run through the ship, meaning the funnel — which usually occupies part of the sun deck — can be eliminated entirely. This allows for a completely new sun deck design with unobstructed views. The 'Vision' concept study is designed to be usable in all weathers and includes fully glazed, weather-protected areas. For instance, the traditional aqua park has been relocated to an indoor area at the stern, ensuring year-round usability

The onboard comfort of the "Vision" improves significantly thanks to the elimination of main engines and the adoption of a fully battery-electric power system. This is because there are fewer engine noises and vibrations.
Seatrade Cruise Global is the cruise industry's leading international trade fair and a central meeting point for senior decision-makers, innovators, and investors. Every year, thousands of industry professionals from all key market segments gather at the Miami Beach Convention Centre to set the strategic agenda for the year ahead.
The event is being organised by Informa Markets, a subsidiary of Informa PLC, which is headquartered in London. Informa is one of the world’s foremost organisers of trade exhibitions and conferences. In addition to Seatrade Cruise Global, Informa delivers other major industry platforms, such as Seatrade Europe and Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific. The show is part of a global portfolio of specialist events designed to facilitate international exchange and business development within the cruise sector.
Spanning the entire cruise value chain, Seatrade Cruise Global combines forward-looking strategic themes with practical, market-ready solutions. Key focus areas include digital transformation and IT systems for shipboard and port operations, environmental technologies and sustainability, health and safety solutions, advanced marine equipment, and modern shipbuilding. The exhibition also covers interior design and outfitting, onboard hospitality and entertainment, innovations in the guest experience, financing models, and the development of destinations and port infrastructure. Exhibitors present highly specialised products and services, including low-emission propulsion systems, digital guest management platforms, premium cabin fit-outs, and immersive entertainment technologies.

MEYER WERFT is one of the largest and most modern shipyards in the world. Cruise ships for international shipping companies have been built at their production and construction docks for several decades. For approximately 230 years, the shipbuilding company has been in business. What began in 1795 with the construction of small wooden sailing ships by shipyard founder Willm Rolf Meyer has developed over the following decades and centuries into the construction of cruise ships. MEYER WERFT has repeatedly demonstrated its pioneering spirit. For example, in 2018, we delivered the world's first LNG-powered cruise ship. MEYER WERFT is widely regarded as a leading technological specialist in cruise ship construction.
