Egypt plans to invest 5.5 billion Egyptian pounds. This is to be used for the expansion and development of the container terminal. The terminal belongs to West Port Said Container Handling Company. West Port Said Container Handling Company is one of the companies included in the government's privatization program.
Asharq News has been told by one of its sources that the expansion work at West Port Said Maritime Port should be finished within 12 to 18 months. This will include the construction of a new 478-metre-long container berth, which will be integrated with the existing 950-metre-long berth. It will also involve deepening the draft from 15 metres to 18 metres. Enhancing the terminal's capacity and operational efficiency is the aim of this project. The plan also involves purchasing four state-of-the-art cranes capable of handling large container ships.
Port Said Container & Cargo Handling Co. (PSCCHC)'s container terminal development plan includes upgrading existing equipment and improving the efficiency of the current berth. The aim is to enable the terminal to accommodate larger vessels and transform it into a key maritime hub for transit trade.'
By the end of the 2024-2025 fiscal year,(PSCCHC) had recorded revenues of EGP 2.6 billion, which was an increase of EGP 633.9 million compared to the previous year. There are currently nine container terminals, through which 8.9 million TEUs were handled by the end of 2024. This represents a growth of 6.8 million TEUs compared to 2023. According to the latest statistics from the Egyptian Ministry of Transport, of these, 4 million TEUs were for the domestic market, and 4.9 million TEUs were in transit.
It is noteworthy that ownership of (PSCCHC) is divided between the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport and Canal Shipping Agencies Company, both of which are affiliated with the Egyptian Ministry of Transport. The former holds a 61.1% stake, while the latter holds 38.5%. The remaining shares are held by the General Authority for the Suez Canal Economic Zone and individual investors.

Egypt aims to increase the handling capacity of its ports. It aims to increase this to approximately 400 million tons annually. It also aims to boost container traffic to 40 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). In addition to this, it aims to accommodate nearly 10 million transit containers annually. It also aims to serve around 30,000 mega-ships annually. These figures come from data provided by the Egyptian Ministry of Transport.
As part of its efforts to expand its regional and international maritime trade network, Egypt also plans to launch new shipping lines to enhance maritime connectivity with East and West African countries. According to Minister of Transport Kamel El-Wazir, this initiative coincides with the development of an Egyptian maritime fleet of 36 vessels, which will be capable of transporting approximately 25 million tons of essential goods for the domestic market by 2030
PSCCHC (Port Said Container and Cargo Handling Company) is a prominent Egyptian state-owned enterprise and key terminal operator at West Port Said. Its location at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal makes it a vital hub for both domestic trade and international transshipment.PSCCHC manages the West Port Said container terminal and provides a range of services, from container handling to general cargo and logistics. It has an annual handling capacity of around 900,000 TEU.
PSCCHC successfully integrated the Navis Terminal Operating System (TOS) in May 2025. From late 2024 through to 2025, the Egyptian government has identified the PSCCHC as a potential candidate for either partial privatisation or strategic investment. A broader national effort is underway to attract foreign capital and enhance operational efficiency within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone).
