The investment of more than £30 million will expand port capacity and operational capability, supporting logistics for offshore wind and other energy projects.

Maraen Port of Nigg has awarded McLaughlin & Harvey the construction contract for its Eastern Inner Dock Quay (EIDQ), marking the start of a significant new phase of infrastructure development at one of the UK's leading energy ports.

The EIDQ project, which has received over £30 million in total investment, will deliver a new, heavy-duty quay measuring approximately 16,000 m². This will give the Port of Nigg additional roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) capability. Construction preparations have now commenced on site, and the project is being supported by a £10 million grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Strengthening Scotland's offshore wind supply chain.

The Scottish Government is behind this project as part of its commitment to invest up to £500 million over five years in strengthening Scotland's offshore wind supply chain. Approximately 16,000 square metres will be covered by the development, which is supported by a £10 million grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The project forms part of the Scottish Government's programme to invest up to £500 million over five years in strengthening the offshore wind supply chain,

Creating a new quay for the energy sector.

Seamus Devlin, the managing director of McLaughlin & Harvey, is quoted as follows: 'We’re pleased to be returning to the Port of Nigg to enhance its capacity and operational capability by creating a new quay for the energy sector. This project builds on our experience of delivering complex marine projects and port infrastructure across the UK and Ireland.”

The Port of Nigg is a strategic hub within the energy industry.

Marathon Port of Nigg already holds a recognised position as a strategic hub within the energy industry, supporting projects both offshore and onshore. The port has deepwater berths. It also has the Green Freeport Tax site and Customs site status. It has a proven record of supporting the deployment of over 4GW of offshore wind capacity. Developers trust the port to deliver at scale.

The EIDQ will reinforce this position.

The EIDQ will reinforce this position. The new quay will serve as a dedicated load-out and export facility for the high-voltage cables produced at the adjacent Sumitomo Electric HVDC facility. This will provide a direct link between the production site and the port. In addition to its immediate purpose, the new quay will increase the port's capacity and capability, enhancing its ability to conduct complex, simultaneous operations and meet the growing demands of the energy industry.

Maraen Port of Nigg considers the Eastern Inner Dock Quay to be a significant project.

Rory Gunn, Facilities Director at Maraen Port of Nigg, said: 'The Eastern Inner Dock Quay is a significant project for Maraen Port of Nigg. This investment provides a dedicated load-out quay for cables from the new Sumitomo factory and increases our port's overall quayside capacity.” "Critical load-in and load-out options will be provided to our current and future customers by the new quay, and our deep-water quay availability will be greatly increased. This project is precisely the type of targeted infrastructure that the energy industry requires from us, and we are looking forward to completing another successful capital investment project at our site.”

"We're delighted to be working once more with McLaughlin & Harvey, who have a strong familiarity with this site and fully grasp the level of quality and safety we demand for successful project delivery. Their work on South Quay transformed the Port of Nigg's capabilities and enabled us to attract large-scale projects from the energy sector that could not previously be accommodated at our site.”
