IRS is strengthening its presence in Europe, for which Hamburg is a natural strategic location. 

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is planning to open a new office in Hamburg, a significant move as it seeks to expand its presence in one of Europe's premier maritime hubs. The classification society says that the German entity is currently being registered.

The IRS has selected Hamburg as its European base

A full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) since 2016, IRS has been recognised by the European Commission under Regulation (EC) No. 391/2009 and has been steadily expanding its international footprint. Hamburg’s position as a leading global maritime centre gives IRS direct access to shipowners, ship managers, shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, technology companies, and research institutions operating in the region.

 Enhance interaction with European manufacturers

The latest base is intended to enhance interaction with European manufacturers whilst creating a gateway into India's growing shipbuilding and maritime market via IRS's endorsement, approval, certification, and compliance services. As India pursues significant growth in its shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing capacity, the office is well placed to facilitate technology partnerships, joint ventures and localisation arrangements between Indian and German or European companies.

Hamburg is the ideal location for IRS's European headquarters.

The company's executive chairman, Arun Sharma, highlights the fact that Hamburg is a natural strategic location. This is because IRS is strengthening its presence in Europe. The aim is to build closer relationships with the industry. The company also aims to support the adoption of advanced technologies. Mr Sharma identified green shipping, alternative fuels, decarbonisation, digitalisation and smart ship solutions as key areas for potential collaboration.

Hamburg is a major global hub for shipping and maritime services.

The decision was welcomed by Dr. Rolf Strittmatter, CEO of Hamburg Invest, as evidence of the city's growing appeal as a global shipping and maritime services hub. He noted that Hamburg Invest had supported IRS in its establishment process and was eager to see the classification society become part of the city's maritime ecosystem.

A broader pattern of Indian maritime institutions extending their reach into established European markets is being added to by this move as India scales up its shipbuilding ambitions. For German and European equipment manufacturers and technology companies, the IRS's presence in Hamburg offers a more direct route into India's growing maritime and shipbuilding sector, at a time when both regions are prioritising the decarbonisation and digitalisation of shipping.
