Another acquisition in the international ports sector has been completed by AP Moller Capital. The infrastructure investment manager linked to the Maersk family holding company has signed an agreement, paving the way for the acquisition of 100% of Portek International from Mitsui & Co. The value of the transaction has not been disclosed, and completion is subject to regulatory approval and other necessary consents.
Portek is a terminal operator and port engineering services provider headquartered in Singapore. Founded in 1988, the group employs approximately 1,400 people and manages seven terminals in Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta, and Vietnam. The group employs around 1,400 people and manages seven terminals in Algeria, Gabon, Indonesia, Latvia, Malta, and Vietnam. Its terminals handle around 700,000 containers, 7 million tonnes of bulk cargo and 90,000 vehicles each year. In addition to traffic management, Portek provides engineering, maintenance and operational management services for port equipment, primarily in Asia.
The Bejaia Mediterranean Terminal in Algeria, operated through a joint venture with the local port authority, is one of the group's standout assets. The facility has a declared capacity of 300,000 TEUs, 500 metres of quayside and a depth of 12 metres. According to Portek, it is the only container terminal in Algeria with ship-to-shore gantry cranes and a dedicated refrigerated container facility. Maersk's interest in this facility may be related to the ongoing review of ETS transhipment regulations.
Valletta Gateway Terminals ( VGT ) in Malta is also part of the portfolio. This combines container operations with multipurpose operations. The group also operates Riga Universal Terminal in Latvia. The group also operates terminals 110–113 at the Tanjung Priok port in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The acquisition forms part of an expansion strategy that has accelerated the consolidation of AP Moller Capital's port investments in recent months. On 28 September, the fund announced that it had agreed to acquire a 53.35% stake in Thaumas, the holding company that controls Euroports. Euroports is a terminal operator with over 50 maritime and inland waterway terminals in ten European countries and China, handling more than 70 million tonnes of cargo annually.

In Italy, Euroports operates in Porto Marghera through Terminal Rinfuse Venezia, which specialises in dry bulk and multipurpose cargo. The acquisition of Portek thus expands an already comprehensive portfolio, which includes a 51% stake in the Spanish logistics group Bergé, operating in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, as well as an agreement for a majority stake in Globex Investissement in Morocco.
Related: A.P. Moller Capital raised $243 million for a fund focused on transport and logistics in Morocco.
The transaction does not involve Maersk being acquired by a new operator, but rather involves an investment by AP Moller Capital, which is an asset manager that is separate from the operating companies of the shipping group. A growing presence at terminals in different geographical areas could present opportunities for business development and logistics integration, as well as providing greater exposure to trade flows between Europe, Africa and Asia.
