QINGDAO – The first offshore aquaculture vessel has been launched in China. In Tongzhou Bay, Nantong, Jiangsu Province, “Zhanjiang Bay No. 1” was launched, the first floating platform for marine cage aquaculture (it floats and can navigate autonomously), equipped with dynamic positioning instruments.

Building of Ship
The ship, built with investment from the Qingdao Conson Development (Group) Co Ltd has a displacement of 150,000 tons. It is 244.9 meters long and houses 15 breeding cabins with a total water holding capacity of nearly 100,000 cubic meters.Around 610 million yuan ($84.6 million) has been invested in the ship, which is for use by Qingdao Conson.
Smart aquaculture system
The ship-borne smart aquaculture system is expected to have an annual output of 3,600 tons of high-quality fish. The breeding cabins can be used to cultivate fish species such as large yellow croaker and salmon. The ship is equipped with Smart navigation systems and green energy, and can operate even beyond the 1,000-meter water depth limit. Its 80,000 cubic meters of intensive aquaculture space and smart management model provide an important platform for the large-scale development of China’s deep-sea aquaculture industry.

The aquaculture area
The new aquaculture vessel is an updated version of its 100,000-ton predecessor delivered on May 20, 2022. Its predecessor has now already traveled over 17,000 nautical miles. The vessel pushed the aquaculture area from nearshore to deep sea, using high-quality seawater resources for breeding
More than 160 technological breakthroughs
The new vessel has made more than 160 technological breakthroughs. In particular, the application of digital and intelligent technologies has been boosted, and the entire fish breeding process is now accomplished fully by machinery.

The commencement ceremony of the Deep-sea Aquaculture Net Cage Public Test Service Platform (Zhanjiang Bay No.1) was held at Jiangsu Dajin Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. Ou Xianwei, Vice Chairman of the Zhanjiang Municipal Political Consultative Conference and Director of the Zhanjiang Bay Laboratory, Sun Jian, Standing Committee Member of the Yangzhong Municipal Committee, and Hang Zhongjiu, Deputy General Manager of CCS Jiangsu Branch, were invited to attend the ceremony and deliver speeches.
