The terminal, which according to the developers could be integrated with Ro-Ro berthing facilities, could also host hubs for energy generation, water purification, and waste-to-energy plants.
Norwegian classification society DNV has given preliminary approval to the project for a floating container terminal built by Sea Technology, issuing its Approval in Principle (AIP).
The Approval in Principle (AIP) confirms that the Sea Technology Floating Terminal (STFT) concept is technically feasible and can form the basis for detailed engineering design and future construction phases," the Swedish company commented in a statement. Specifically, it explains, DNV's assessment was conducted based on the OI Floating Infrastructure Installation class notation, with reference to the relevant offshore structural design standards (DNVGL-RU-OU-0571 and DNV-OS-C102).
STFT will be able to operate as a transhipment termina
According to its developers, STFT will be able to operate as a transhipment terminal, offering an annual capacity of 5-6 million TEUs, making it particularly useful in areas such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Arctic, which are facing growing demand but lack mature infrastructure, and in waters with a maximum depth of 1,000 meters. More specifically, it will be a rectangular structure (6-700 meters long by 360 meters wide), with a draft of 17-18 meters.

The terminal, which according to its designers could be integrated with RO -RO berthing facilities, could also host hubs for energy production, water purification, and waste-to-energy plants.
Proceed with the next phase of engineering and classification
After this preliminary approval, Sea Technology explained that it will proceed with the next phase of engineering and classification, including energy, logistics, and environmental systems and aspects in the design. To this end, the company recently partnered with Meyer Floating Solutions, a provider of advanced floating architecture and marine engineering solutions, with the aim of further refining STFT's technical design, exploring modular construction solutions, and preparing international demonstration projects.
Support TPG Rise Climate's investment
On the other hand DNV has completed independent technical due diligence for climate investor TPG Rise Climate’s majority financing in Kinetic, Australasia’s largest mass transit operator, supporting its transition to a zero-emissions fleet.
