The meeting addressed the need for additional safety measures for Italian-flagged vessels operating in high-risk areas.

The CISM (Inter-Ministerial Committee for Maritime Transport Security) held a meeting at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Rome to update the international maritime security framework. The meeting addressed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its potential impact on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and routes connecting the Mediterranean to the Indo-Pacific, particularly in reference to tensions related to the conflict.

According to a statement from the ministry, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi and attended by representatives from the General Command of the Port Authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, the Joint Operations Command, and the main national shipping associations.

The meeting's agenda 

The meeting's agenda included a review of the current maritime security levels in the most sensitive shipping areas, such as the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf, as well as for transit in the Gulf of Oman. Security measures remain heightened in Middle Eastern ports and areas affected by regional tensions.

Safety measures for Italian-flagged vessels

Furthermore, additional safety measures were examined for Italian-flagged vessels operating in high-risk areas. These measures included a strengthened application of the procedures set forth in the ISPS Code, as well as the use of the combined safety-security risk assessment methodology introduced by the General Command of the Port Authorities.

The Ministry of Transport is still working closely with the relevant administrations and the sector's operators. This collaboration is crucial for monitoring the evolving geopolitical landscape and ensuring secure conditions along the primary trade routes.
