The 174,000-cbm LNG carrier Th'ailib is the first of three MISC vessels that will operate on long-term charters with QatarEnergy.

Malaysian shipowner MISC has taken delivery of Th'ailib, the first vessel in QatarEnergy's Tranche II LNG newbuilding programme to be classed by DNV, according to DNV Maritime. The 174,000-cbm LNG carrier was built by South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries and is the first of three MISC vessels that will operate on long-term charters with QatarEnergy.

The Th’ailib is equipped with dual-fuel engines

The Th’ailib is equipped with dual-fuel engines, a liquefaction system, a high-performance anti-fouling hull coating, and an air lubrication system. DNV is classing all three vessels and also providing MISC with decarbonisation planning, lifecycle assessments, and training for the on-site team. The ship will be chartered to QatarEnergy for 15 years from 2026. MISC secured the three vessels in Phase Two of QatarEnergy’s LNG fleet expansion, having participated in Phase One through a consortium involving 12 LNG carriers.

QatarEnergy awarded MISC a three-vessel package

In March 2024, QatarEnergy awarded MISC a three-vessel package as part of agreements covering 19 conventional LNG carriers. All three vessels are being built by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea, with the Th’ailib being named at the shipyard on 6 October. The two remaining vessels in the series are scheduled for delivery.
