The "Port of the Future" vision is being actively pursued by the Port, with plans to increase current container volumes to 20 million annually by 2050. 

The Port of Long Beach has announced its cargo numbers for May 2026, which are impressive. A substantial 31.7% increase in twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) was reported compared to the same month last year. This surge brought the total to 842,030 TEUs, making it the port's third-busiest May ever. Imports surged by 40% to 418,851 TEUs, while exports also experienced a substantial rise of 32.9% to 109,168 TEUs. Empty containers increased. They went up by 21.8%. The number of empty containers is now 314,012 TEUs.

These gains were highlighted by ILWU Local 13 President Mario “Moe” Medina and Port of Long Beach CEO Dr. Noel Hacegaba. The port has handled 4,050,247 TEUs year-to-date, a 0.2% increase over the first five months of 2025. This puts it on pace for its busiest year ever.
