The Tarros Group has a new partner, and several well-known names are in the running. These names could either buy a stake in the group or make a deal focused on its terminal and logistics operations. These include Contship ( Italy ), DP World and, most recently, Gulftainer. According to the Città della Spezia newspaper, the two Emirati groups have gained ground in recent weeks, overtaking Contship in the race for Terminal del Golfo (TdG) in La Spezia.
The Gulf Terminal, an asset owned by the La Spezia-based shipping group Tarros, is the focus of much interest, though the deal could have a broader scope. Tarros boasts a maritime and logistics network spanning the Mediterranean, connecting 16 countries and 31 ports. This asset makes the group an attractive prospect for international operators looking to strengthen their presence in the region, and it has the potential to open up new opportunities for the group as well as the region as a whole.
The most advanced negotiations with Contship in recent months have reportedly come to a sudden halt. While this does not necessarily mean that the matter is closed, the landscape has shifted, and DP World and Gulftainer are now considered the leading candidates to join the deal.
Contship has a particularly robust local presence: the group is already active in La Spezia through the La Spezia Container Terminal — in which it holds a majority stake — and thus possesses firsthand knowledge of the market and the port's prospects. Meanwhile, DP World would bring the global scale of a leading international port and logistics operator to the deal.

Gulftainer, a Sharjah-based group that Crescent Enterprises controls and that specialises in terminal management and logistics, has also entered the fray. Its bid has reportedly helped reopen a contest that, until a few months ago, seemed set to be won by Contship. CMA CGM is also lurking in the background, having expressed interest in recent months. The French group, the world’s third-largest shipping company, had expressed interest in the deal and could be another potential partner for Tarros.
The decision is also associated with the fiscal and industrial requirements of the La Spezia-based collective, which is obliged to finance substantial investments for the advancement of the Tdg and its operations. Bringing in an international partner would allow us to share the financial burden while simultaneously strengthening the terminal's commercial capabilities. At present, there are no definitive agreements in place. The situation remains open, with Contship still in the running, though recent reports suggest that DP World and Gulftainer are now in the lead.
