Today, I pause to honor the men and women who make modern civilization possible, our world's seafarers.
For me, this day is deeply personal. My grandfather was a professional mariner. My father was a professional mariner. My brothers and I followed the same calling, and today, my son continues that tradition. For generations, my family has understood both the privilege and the sacrifice that come with a life at sea.
What many people never see is what it truly means to be a seafarer
They see ships on the horizon. They see containers arriving in port. They see fuel at the pump, groceries on store shelves, medicines in hospitals, automobiles in dealerships, and the countless products that sustain our daily lives. What they often do not see are the dedicated professionals who spend weeks and months away from their families, standing watch through storms, navigating congested waterways, maintaining complex machinery, protecting our oceans, and ensuring that global commerce moves safely, efficiently, securely, and responsibly.
More than 80 percent of global trade by volume travels by sea. Every nation, every economy, and nearly every household depends upon the commitment and professionalism of seafarers. Yet they remain among the world's most essential, and least recognized professionals.

Without them, our economies would falter, supply chains would fail, industries would slow, and communities around the world would feel the impact almost immediately. The prosperity that so many of us take for granted is built upon the quiet dedication of those who serve at sea.
As both a mariner and an educator, I have been privileged to spend my life working alongside these remarkable professionals. I have witnessed their resilience, their competence, their humility, and their unwavering commitment to bringing every vessel and every crew safely home.
Today, let us recognize that behind every ship is a crew. Behind every voyage is a sacrifice. Behind every cargo is extraordinary professionalism.

To every seafarer around the world - past, present, and future, THANK YOU!
You are the quiet professionals of global commerce. You are the guardians of the world's supply chains. You are the backbone of international trade. Most importantly, you are the reason our interconnected world continues to thrive.
For that, I honor you, the Mariner.
Happy International Day of the Seafarer.
