 Maersk will impose a $500 peak season surcharge (PSS) on cargo bound for Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland from East Africa, effective from 17 September 2026.

According to Maersk, the company will impose a $500 Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on East African cargo bound for Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland, effective from 17 September 2026. The charge will cover 20DRY containers. It will also cover 40DRY containers. And it will cover 40HDRY containers. These containers must be shipped from Burundi. They must also be shipped from Djibouti. The same applies to containers from Eritrea. And from Ethiopia. And from Kenya. And from Rwanda. And from Somalia. And from Sudan. And from South Sudan. And from Tanzania. And from Uganda.

 Market conditions and capacity constraints

Maersk has linked this decision to prevailing market conditions and capacity constraints affecting trade into North Europe. The surcharge is intended to support the continued provision of transport services and access to available capacity in the region. The PSS will be collected under the freight payment terms applicable to each shipment and will form part of the relevant ocean freight charges under the applicable tariff, quotation, service contract or transportation agreement.

All rates and charges remain subject to applicable laws and regulatory requirements.

However, the $500 rate is subject to contractual arrangements, local charges, surcharges, contingency charges and other applicable charges. This notice does not amend or override any service contract, tariff, quotation, bill of lading or other transportation agreement.
