Investigations have not yet revealed the causes of the fire on the ASL container ship since January 28, despite the denial by the Joint Maritime Information Center of the Joint Naval Forces ASL BAUHINIA that the fire that broke out on board the container ship
Which flies the Hong Kong flag has nothing to do with the activity of the Houthi group .The ship was built in 2022, so its age does not exceed three years, and it carries (9935868 IMO) which weighs 1930 standard containers, and it sails at a speed of 13.7 knots
The ship was en route from Jebel Ali to Aqaba via the Suez Canal and it appears that the ship was carrying a dangerous cargo when the incident occurred in the early hours of January 28, 2025 when the crew discovered a fire on the deck of the ship 122 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah, Yemen.
This incident coincides with the expected gradual resumption of shipping services across the region, following recent developments in the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and 122 nautical miles northwest of Hodeidah, Yemen. The ship’s crew was rescued by another ship sailing in open waters off Yemen.
On the other hand, the Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad revealed that there were 800 containers on board the ship out of 1,500 containers for Jordanian importers. Despite the fact that no official or unofficial Jordanian body was informed of the details of the fire and the containers that were hit by the flames, the customs clearance offices received information that hazardous materials were inside one of the containers that burned 11 days ago while on board the ship and the extinguishing process is still ongoing.
Owners of customs clearance offices told Al-Ghad that all containers are subject to insurance on board the ship, but the compensation process is according to the value of the invoices attached to the value of the goods shipped on board the ship, and that there are Jordanian merchants who deliberately reduce the value of the goods so as not to incur exorbitant customs fees.
The head of the Customs Clearance Offices Association, Dhaifallah Abu Aqouleh, said that there is no information yet about the ship as long as it is outside Jordanian territorial waters, indicating that the most likely information is that the ship must dock in the port of Jeddah after the extinguishing operations are completed, and then in the port of Aqaba.
