Venezuelan oil exports have fallen sharply since the United States seized an oil tanker earlier this year and imposed new sanctions on shipping companies

Reuters  reported that a Russian oil tanker carrying oil for Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA, and at least four other supertankers bound for Venezuela to load crude oil shipments, turned back after the United States seized a vessel carrying Venezuelan oil last week, according to ship-tracking data released on Monday.

Escalating tensions between Venezuela and US

Last week, the US Coast Guard intercepted and seized a giant oil tanker (VLCC) carrying about 1.85 million barrels of Venezuelan heavy crude oil sold by PDVSA, in a sign of escalating tensions between Venezuela and the United States, which has stepped up its pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.

Brent crude futures

Brent crude futures fell 20 cents, or 0.33%, to $60.92 a barrel by 13:01 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures slipped 21 cents, or 0.3%, to $57.59 a barrel.Crude oil futures have fallen by more than 4% in recent days, amid forecasts of a global oil surplus in 2026.

"The gradual decline in oil prices and their hitting month-lows across all major futures markets last week could have led to further negative pricing had it not been for the US escalation of its stance on Venezuela," said John Evans, an analyst at PVM.

Venezuelan oil exports have fallen sharply

Venezuelan oil exports have fallen sharply since the United States seized an oil tanker earlier this year and imposed new sanctions on shipping companies and vessels dealing with the Latin American oil-producing nation, according to shipping data, documents, and maritime sources.

The market is closely monitoring developments and their impact on oil supplies, and Reuters reported that the United States plans to intercept more ships carrying Venezuelan oil following the tanker seizure, further increasing pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.
